Nyerere (Selous) National Park

Overview

Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest protected areas and a jewel of Southern Tanzania. Covering over 30,000 square kilometers, this vast wilderness is a sanctuary for diverse landscapes ranging from open savannahs and riverine forests to wetlands nourished by the mighty Rufiji River.

Nyerere is home to one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, including elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and African wild dogs. Predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas roam the plains, while the Rufiji River hosts an incredible density of hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife.

What makes Nyerere unique is the variety of experiences beyond traditional game drives. Visitors can enjoy boat safaris on the Rufiji River, guided walking safaris, and classic game drives across its remote landscapes. These activities offer an intimate way to explore one of Tanzania’s wildest regions.

Less crowded than the Northern Circuit parks, Nyerere National Park is perfect for travelers seeking an authentic safari in pristine wilderness, rich in wildlife and natural beauty.
