Overview
Known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s most iconic safari destinations. Formed millions of years ago by a collapsed volcano, this vast caldera is home to some of the richest wildlife populations in Africa.
Within the crater’s 260 square kilometers, visitors can encounter an astonishing variety of animals, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, and wildebeests. The crater is also one of the best places in Tanzania to spot the endangered black rhino.
The landscapes are just as breathtaking as the wildlife, with open grasslands, freshwater lakes, and acacia forests set against the dramatic crater walls. Bird enthusiasts will enjoy sightings of flamingos, crowned cranes, and ostriches, among many others.
Part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a unique blend of wildlife and cultural heritage, as the Maasai people still live and herd their cattle within the area.
For its unmatched scenery, incredible game viewing, and cultural significance, the Ngorongoro Crater is a must-see highlight of Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit.
