Overview
The 6-Day Marangu Route, often referred to as the "Coca-Cola Route," is the most established and comfortable route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route offering mountain hut accommodation throughout the climb, making it an excellent choice for climbers who prefer sleeping in dormitory-style huts rather than camping. This six-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, significantly improving summit success while allowing ample time to adapt to the increasing altitude. Beginning from the lush rainforest of Marangu Gate, the route passes through diverse ecological zones before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.

Tour Plan
Day 1: Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut (2,700 m)
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with an early morning briefing at Panama Lodge, where you will meet your experienced mountain guides and support crew for an equipment check and climb orientation. After a short drive to Marangu Gate, complete the park registration before beginning your trek through the lush montane rainforest. The trail winds beneath towering trees draped with moss while colorful birds and black-and-white colobus monkeys can often be spotted along the way. After a gentle ascent, arrive at Mandara Hut, where you will settle into comfortable mountain huts and enjoy your first dinner on the mountain.
Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,700 m)
Following breakfast, continue your ascent as the dense rainforest gradually gives way to open heath and moorland. Along the trail, discover Kilimanjaro's famous giant lobelias and giant groundsels, unique plants found only at high elevations. As you climb higher, enjoy increasingly spectacular views of both Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak before reaching Horombo Hut, the largest accommodation area on the mountain. After lunch, relax or take a short acclimatization walk around the surrounding hills.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,700 m)
Today's schedule is dedicated to altitude acclimatization, greatly improving your chances of successfully reaching the summit. After breakfast, take a guided hike toward Zebra Rocks, famous for their distinctive black-and-white volcanic stripes, before returning to Horombo Hut for lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing, hydrating, and preparing your clothing and equipment for the higher elevations. Your mountain guides will review the summit schedule, safety procedures, and answer any final questions.
Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700 m)
After an early breakfast, leave the vegetation behind as you enter Kilimanjaro's alpine desert. The trail crosses the broad saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi, offering dramatic volcanic scenery and uninterrupted mountain views. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, enjoy an early lunch before spending the afternoon resting. Your guides will conduct a final equipment inspection and summit briefing before an early dinner. Rest is essential as the summit climb begins shortly before midnight.
Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut (3,700 m)
Shortly before midnight, begin your ascent to the summit beneath a sky filled with stars. The climb follows a gradual zigzag path to Gilman's Point (5,685 m) before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Witness an unforgettable sunrise above the clouds, celebrate your remarkable achievement, and capture memorable photographs before beginning the descent. Return briefly to Kibo Hut before continuing to Horombo Hut, where a warm meal and well-earned rest await.
Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi / Arusha
After breakfast, enjoy your final descent through moorland before re-entering the lush rainforest. Along the trail, pass scenic waterfalls, towering trees, and beautiful forest vegetation as you make your way to Marangu Gate. After completing exit formalities, receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate before meeting your driver for the transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the successful completion of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure.
