Eastern Tanzania

Coast, forest,
and plains.

Eastern Tanzania — the coastal corridor from Dar es Salaam and west into the Udzungwa Highlands — offers a different Tanzania from the northern circuit. Miombo woodland, Indian Ocean shore, endemic primates, and the bush-meets-beach combination at Saadani create itineraries the classic north cannot replicate.

Mikumi National Park lies about four hours by road from Dar es Salaam and is the most accessible major park from the commercial capital. The Mkata floodplain supports good densities of lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo, making Mikumi a viable option for guests with limited time who cannot reach the northern circuit. Often overlooked by international visitors, it has a genuine wildlife programme and reliable dry-season sightings.

The Udzungwa Mountains are one of Africa’s important biodiversity hotspots — ancient forest isolated from other blocks, with multiple endemic species. Sanje mangabey and Uhehe red colobus are found nowhere else. Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers trekking through afro-montane forest to the Sanje Waterfalls — one of East Africa’s great waterfall walks. Day walks and multi-day forest camping are both available.

Eastern Tanzania parks

What the east
offers.

Most accessible · ~4 hrs from Dar

Mikumi National Park

The most accessible major national park in Tanzania from Dar es Salaam. The Mkata floodplain supports lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and a rich bird community. The park borders the Selous/Nyerere ecosystem and shares wildlife populations. A two to three day visit can combine with a Dar arrival or a Zanzibar beach stay for guests who lack time for the northern circuit.

Endemic primates · Forest trekking

Udzungwa Mountains

A biodiversity hotspot with multiple endemic species found nowhere else. The Sanje mangabey — a critically endangered primate — is visible on guided forest walks along river channels. The Sanje Waterfalls hike (four to five hours round trip) passes through primary forest to a ~170-metre waterfall. For primate ecology, forest birding, or endemic species, Udzungwa is among Tanzania’s most rewarding destinations.

Beach & bush combined

Saadani National Park

Saadani is the only national park in East Africa where the bush meets the beach — a combination unique on the continent. Lion, elephant, and buffalo use the coastal zone; dhows pass offshore. Mangrove boat safaris on the Wami River access hippo, crocodile, and strong birdlife. The beach is Indian Ocean quality. Undervisited and straightforward from Dar (about three hours) or by boat from Zanzibar.

Forest · Bird diversity

Eastern Arc & Usambara

The Eastern Arc Mountains — Usambara, Pare, and Udzungwa among them — are among Africa’s most important endemic areas. Amani Nature Reserve and Usambara forest trails reward birders and botanists with highland endemics in a relatively compact corridor. Pair with Saadani or Mikumi for an east-coast Tanzania itinerary that feels completely different from the Serengeti north.

Planning eastern Tanzania

How to include
the east.

Yes. Eastern parks are often add-ons to northern or southern circuits. Common combinations: Mikumi or Udzungwa plus Nyerere for a southern/eastern circuit (fly-in logistics); Saadani plus Zanzibar for a coastal extension; Udzungwa for a primate-focused addition to a mainland safari. We design these combinations and manage multi-park logistics.
Mikumi and Saadani work well for visitors arriving via Dar with limited time for the north. Wildlife at Mikumi is authentic and reliably visible in the dry season; Saadani offers a beach-and-bush mix the north cannot. For dedicated wildlife-focused first-timers with enough nights, the Northern Circuit remains the stronger classic choice — but for coastal or primate interests, the east is genuinely special.
Dry season (June–October) is optimal for Mikumi and Saadani — better roads and wildlife concentrated at water. Udzungwa forest is accessible year-round; dry season trails are less muddy. Saadani’s coastal atmosphere and mangrove birding work year-round, with peak sea turtle activity roughly November–February. Eastern Arc birding is often strongest November–April when Palaearctic migrants are present.
