Eastern Tanzania

Coast, forest,
and plains.

Eastern Tanzania — the coastal corridor from Dar es Salaam north to the Kenyan border and west to the Udzungwa Highlands — offers a completely different Tanzania from the northern circuit. Miombo woodland, coral reef, endemic primates, and the unique combination of beach and savanna at Saadani National Park create an itinerary that no other East African destination can replicate.

Mikumi National Park lies four hours by road from Dar es Salaam and is the most accessible major park in Tanzania from the commercial capital. The Mkata floodplain supports good densities of lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo, making Mikumi a viable option for guests with limited time who cannot reach the northern circuit. The park is often overlooked by international visitors but has a genuine wildlife programme and reliable predator sightings.

The Udzungwa Mountains are one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots — a range of ancient forest isolated from other forest blocks that has produced multiple endemic species. The Sanje mangabey and the Uhehe red colobus are found nowhere else on Earth. The Udzungwa Mountains National Park offers trekking through afro-montane forest to the Sanje Waterfalls — one of the most spectacular waterfall walks in East Africa. Day walks and multi-day forest camping are both available.

Eastern Tanzania Parks

What the east
offers.

Most Accessible · 4hrs from Dar

Mikumi National Park

The most accessible major national park in Tanzania from Dar es Salaam. The Mkata floodplain supports lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and a rich bird community. The park borders the Selous/Nyerere ecosystem and shares wildlife populations. A two to three day visit to Mikumi can be combined with a Dar es Salaam arrival or a Zanzibar beach stay for guests who have limited time to reach the northern circuit.

Endemic Primates · Forest Trekking

Udzungwa Mountains

The Udzungwa Mountains are a biodiversity hotspot with multiple endemic species found nowhere else. The Sanje mangabey — a critically endangered primate — is the most significant: visible on guided forest walks along the river channels. The Sanje Waterfalls hike (four to five hours round trip) passes through primary forest and ends at a 170-metre waterfall. For guests interested in primate ecology, forest birding, or endemic species, the Udzungwa is one of the most rewarding destinations in Tanzania.

Beach & Bush Combined

Saadani National Park

Saadani is the only national park in East Africa where the bush meets the beach — a combination unique on the continent. Lion, elephant, and buffalo wander the coastal zone. Dhow fishing boats pass offshore. Mangrove boat safaris on the Wami River access hippo, crocodile, and extraordinary birdlife. The beach is Indian Ocean quality. Saadani is undervisited and logistically straightforward from Dar es Salaam (three-hour transfer or direct boat from Zanzibar).

Coastal Forest · Bird Diversity

Arabuko Sokoke & Eastern Arc

The Eastern Arc Mountains — a chain of ancient forest fragments from the Usambara and Pare ranges in the north to the Udzungwa in the south — are one of Africa's most important endemic areas. Arabuko-Sokoke Forest on the coast is the largest remaining coastal forest in East Africa and supports Clarke's weaver, Amani sunbird, and other endemics. For ornithologists and botanists, the Eastern Arc Mountains offer a lifetime's worth of endemic species in a relatively compact corridor.

Planning Eastern Tanzania

How to include
the east.

Can I combine eastern and northern parks?
Yes. Eastern Tanzania parks are typically added as add-ons to northern or southern circuit itineraries. Common combinations: Mikumi or Udzungwa plus Nyerere for a complete southern/eastern circuit (fly-in logistics). Saadani plus Zanzibar for a coastal Tanzania extension. Udzungwa for a primate-focused addition to a mainland safari. Kisangara designs these extended combinations and manages the logistics of multiple-park itineraries across eastern Tanzania.
Is eastern Tanzania suitable for first-time safari visitors?
Mikumi and Saadani are good entry-point destinations for visitors who arrive via Dar es Salaam and have limited time for the northern circuit. The wildlife at Mikumi is authentic and reliably visible in the dry season. Saadani offers a unique beach-and-bush combination that cannot be found in the north. For dedicated wildlife-focused first-timers with adequate time, the Northern Circuit remains the stronger recommendation — but for guests with coastal or primate interests, the eastern parks are genuinely special.
What is the best time for eastern Tanzania?
The dry season (June–October) is optimal for Mikumi and Saadani — best road conditions and most concentrated wildlife at water sources. The Udzungwa forest is accessible year-round; the dry season makes the trails less muddy and the walks more comfortable. Saadani's coastal atmosphere and mangrove birding is excellent year-round, with peak sea turtle activity on the beaches from November through February. The Eastern Arc birding is best during the November–April period when Palaearctic migrants are in residence.
