A safari company should be defined by its guides — not its marketing.
Why KisangaraAfrica’s largest protected ecosystem — at 5% of the visitor density.
Southern CircuitThere are many safari operators in Tanzania. Here is what makes Kisangara different.
Kisangara Tours was founded in Arusha in 2009 by a team of Tanzanian wildlife guides who had worked for larger operators and believed that something more specific, more personal, and more honest was possible. Fifteen years later, we have arranged safaris for guests from sixty countries and maintained a single operating principle: the experience we design must be exactly what we would want for ourselves.
We are not a large company and have no intention of becoming one. Large companies build systems to manage scale. Kisangara is structured to manage quality — to know every guide personally, to have stayed at every property we recommend, to speak with every guest before they travel, and to be reachable when something unexpected happens in the field. When a guest emails at 11pm from the northern Serengeti about a logistics change, a person who knows the itinerary answers. Not a call centre. Not a ticketing system.
Our pricing is transparent. We do not apply commission markups to accommodation without disclosing them. We do not add agent fees that are not itemised. The cost breakdown in every Kisangara quotation shows exactly what each component costs and why. If a cheaper option exists that meets the quality threshold, we mention it. If an element is non-negotiable for quality reasons, we explain why. This transparency is not universal in the Tanzania safari industry and we believe it should be the standard.
We are Tanzanian-owned and operated. Every member of the guiding and operations team is Tanzanian. A portion of every safari contributes to the Kisangara community fund, which has supported two primary schools, one wildlife ranger training programme, and a women's cooperative in northern Tanzania. We operate in and from the country whose natural heritage we sell, and we believe that the health of that ecosystem and those communities is directly connected to our ability to operate.
Our guides are Tanzanian nationals who grew up near the parks they operate in. This is not a recruitment criterion — it is the natural result of hiring the best guides in the country. Local knowledge is generational, ecological, and linguistic. It cannot be substituted by training.
We do not put guests into pre-built itineraries. We design from the beginning of each conversation. The result is an itinerary that fits your specific dates, interests, budget, and travel style — not the nearest available template. Every programme is different.
Every quotation shows exactly what each element costs. No unexplained mark-ups. No fee categories that inflate the total invisibly. If something costs more than an alternative, we explain why. Guests who understand what they are paying for trust the relationship more fully — and travel better as a result.
We respond to all enquiries within 24 hours. In field emergencies, a member of the operations team is reachable at any hour. Guests in the Serengeti do not reach voicemail. They reach a person who knows their itinerary, their camp, and their guide by name.
A portion of every safari contributes to community and conservation programmes in northern Tanzania. We do not use conservation as a marketing claim — we use it as an operational principle. The communities adjacent to the parks are the first line of wildlife protection. Supporting them is not philanthropic; it is practical.
We tell guests when we think their planned itinerary is wrong for their objectives — even if that means recommending a different park or a shorter trip. We tell guests which properties are overpriced relative to their quality. We tell guests when the season they have chosen is not optimal for their primary goal. This honesty occasionally costs us bookings. We prefer it to the alternative.
"I have used four Tanzania operators over twelve years. Kisangara is the one I stayed with. The difference is that they treat you as a person with specific interests, not a number in a booking system. Every detail was exactly right."
Philippe B.Paris · Fifth Visit · 2024"I contacted Kisangara because I had been on three safaris with other operators and none of them had matched the guide quality I was looking for. Kisangara matched me with exactly the right guide on the first booking. I have not used anyone else since."
Dr. Maria S.Rome · Third Visit · 2024"Every company claims to be personal and boutique. Kisangara actually is. My enquiry was answered in three hours with a fully designed itinerary, personalised to everything I had said in my initial email. That level of attention is what I had stopped believing was available."
