Tanzania Island Extensions

The savanna.
Then the sea.

Tanzania sits on the Indian Ocean with three island destinations of genuinely world-class quality. After days in the Serengeti dust, the transition to an Indian Ocean island is one of the great contrasts in travel. A single domestic flight separates the two worlds.

Zanzibar — the largest island, thirty minutes by air from Dar es Salaam or ninety minutes from the Serengeti — is the most visited island destination in East Africa. The reasons are clear: Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Arab-Portuguese architecture that is unlike anything else in Africa, the northern coast beaches are white sand and turquoise water, and the reef snorkelling and diving is excellent. Zanzibar is also where Freddie Mercury was born, where the last sultan of Zanzibar held court, and where the Indian Ocean dhow trade has operated for two thousand years.

Pemba Island, forty kilometres north of Zanzibar, receives a fraction of Zanzibar's visitors and is known almost exclusively by serious divers. The Pemba Channel wall diving — steep underwater walls dropping hundreds of metres, swept by strong currents that bring pelagic species including hammerhead sharks — is considered among the finest advanced diving in the western Indian Ocean. Accommodation is limited and deliberately understated. For guests who want complete seclusion and exceptional underwater access, Pemba is the island recommendation.

Mafia Island, south of Dar es Salaam, is the most pristine of the three. The Mafia Island Marine Park is one of the most biodiverse marine protected areas in the western Indian Ocean. Whale sharks are present from November through February — the most reliable whale shark encounter site in East Africa. Sea turtle nesting occurs on the beaches year-round. The island has no mass tourism, limited accommodation, and a genuinely remote character that the other islands have lost.

Three Islands Compared

Which island
for you.

01Most Complete · Heritage & Beach

Zanzibar

Stone Town UNESCO heritage, Jozani Forest red colobus monkeys, excellent reef snorkelling, full accommodation range from boutique heritage hotels to beach resorts. The north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) has the most consistent beach conditions year-round. The east coast (Paje) is the kitesurfing centre. A minimum of five nights gives time for both Stone Town and the beach. The default island recommendation for first-time Tanzania visitors.

02Best Diving · Remote

Pemba Island

Forty kilometres north of Zanzibar, Pemba receives a fraction of visitor numbers. The Pemba Channel wall diving is world-class — steep walls, strong currents, hammerhead sharks, and exceptional visibility. Accommodation is limited to a few small properties. The island is characterised by dense clove-scented forest, dhow-building villages, and the absence of tourist infrastructure outside the dive centres. For serious divers and those wanting complete seclusion, Pemba is the recommendation.

03Most Pristine · Marine Park

Mafia Island

Mafia Island Marine Park is one of the most biodiverse marine protected areas in the western Indian Ocean. Whale sharks arrive November–February in numbers unmatched anywhere else in East Africa. Sea turtles nest year-round. The reef diving is exceptional, the island is quiet, and accommodation is limited to a handful of carefully selected properties. For guests who want the best marine experience combined with complete solitude, Mafia is Africa's answer.

Stone Town Guide

Zanzibar's
historic heart.

Stone Town is a living city, not a museum. People live in these buildings. Markets operate in these alleys. The carved doors are on working houses. This is Swahili-Arab-Portuguese architecture in continuous use.

Stone Town was the hub of the Indian Ocean spice trade and the Arab slave trade for three centuries. The Palace Museum, the Old Fort, and the Anglican Cathedral — built on the site of the last slave market — tell this history without sanitising it. The narrow alleys of the old town lead to courtyards, mosques, tea houses, and the Darajani Market where the clove and cardamom trade that built Zanzibar's wealth is still visible in the spice stalls.

Freddie Mercury was born at 1 Shangani Street in 1946. A small plaque marks the house. The Mercury Museum, opened in 2019, documents his life and the Zanzibar that formed him. For guests interested in this history, a guided Stone Town walk with a stop at the Mercury Museum and the house takes approximately four hours.

How long should I spend in Stone Town?
One full day minimum; two days gives enough time to explore without rushing. The key sites — the Palace Museum, Old Fort, Anglican Cathedral slave market memorial, Darajani Market, and the waterfront — take a full day with a guide. A second day allows deeper exploration of the residential alleys, a spice farm tour (one hour outside Stone Town), and the Jozani Forest red colobus monkey walk. Most guests who budget one afternoon for Stone Town regret not having more time.
Is Zanzibar safe for solo female travellers?
Zanzibar is generally safe for solo female travellers. Stone Town requires the same urban awareness as any tourist city — be aware of surroundings, use recommended taxi services, avoid displaying valuables. The beach areas are relaxed. Conservative dress is respectful in Stone Town — shoulders and knees covered. The island has a Muslim majority population and local customs around modesty are worth respecting, particularly in the markets and alleys of the old town.
