The Roof of Africa

Africa’s highest
summit. Earned.

No technical ropes — the challenge is altitude, time, and steady pace when the air thins.

In six to eight days you move from rainforest to arctic crater rim. We favour longer routes for acclimatisation, carry emergency oxygen and pulse oximeters, and never rush summit night to cut cost.

Combine with a northern-circuit safari after the climb — warmth, rest, and wildlife after the ice.

The six routes

Choose your path.

Duration and acclimatisation shape success more than fitness alone. Lemosho (8 days) is our usual first recommendation.

Best for most · 8 days

Lemosho

Scenic western approach, strong acclimatisation, quieter trails. Our primary pick for first summits.

Classic · 7–8 days

Machame

Popular “Whiskey” route with high–low–high profile. Eight days beats seven for most climbers.

Longest · 9–10 days

Northern Circuit

Most remote and thorough acclimatisation. Best for climbers who want the full mountain.

Huts · 6–8 days

Marangu

Only hut route. Shortest options raise altitude risk — longer Marangu is safer.

Drier north · 7–8 days

Rongai

Kenya-side approach; often better in wetter months. Descends via Marangu.

Steep · experienced

Umbwe

Direct and demanding. For very fit climbers with prior altitude experience only.

Zones & FAQ

What to expect
on the mountain.

Cultivated slopes → montane forest → heath & moorland → alpine desert → arctic summit. Each has its own climate and plants; forest and moorland are richest for wildlife and views of the glaciers.
You walk, you don’t rope-climb. Aim to hike 6–8 hours comfortably at home. Altitude can’t be trained — use 7–8+ day routes, go slow, hydrate. Guides monitor with oximeters; Diamox may help if your doctor agrees.
Park fees, lead & assistant guides, porters, mountain meals, tents & mats, emergency oxygen, first aid, Arusha–trailhead transfers, and Arusha nights before/after as quoted. Flights, insurance, personal gear, and tips are separate.
Strong months: Jan–Mar and Jun–Oct. Apr–May is wet on lower slopes. After summit, many guests add 5–7 days in Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Tarangire — we plan both from Arusha.
Practical note

Insurance &
Flying Doctors.

Travel insurance with evacuation cover is required. We also recommend AMREF Flying Doctors membership for East Africa field emergencies — details go in your pre-travel pack.
