When to Visit Tanzania

There is no
wrong time.

Tanzania is a year-round destination. The wildlife does not hibernate. The Serengeti is never closed. What changes between seasons is the character of the landscape, the distribution of wildlife, the rainfall, and the pricing. Every month has something to recommend it — and something to warn about.

The distinction most travellers draw — dry season versus green season — is real but often oversimplified. The dry season (June–October) brings the most predictable game viewing, clearest skies, and the Mara River crossings in the north. It also brings the highest prices, most visitors, and the densest vehicle concentrations at major sightings. The green season (November–May) brings lush landscapes, calving season drama, half the visitors, and rates that are often thirty to forty percent lower. Neither is objectively better; each is better for a different kind of traveller.

Our recommendation is always calibrated to what the guest actually wants to see and experience. If seeing a Mara River crossing is the primary objective, July to October in the northern Serengeti is the only answer. If encountering predator-prey dynamics at the highest intensity, February at Ndutu during calving is unsurpassed. If budget is a constraint, November to December gives excellent wildlife and value. If combining with a beach extension, pairing the rainy seasons across mainland and island requires careful month-by-month planning.

Month by Month

Every month.
What to expect.

January & February — Peak Calving, Green Season
January and February are among the best months to visit Tanzania and among the least visited. The calving season is at its peak in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area — up to 8,000 wildebeest calves born per day, drawing the highest predator concentrations of the year. Cheetah, lion, hyena, and wild dog are all highly active. The landscape is green and photogenic. Visitor numbers are lower than July–October. Camp rates are often moderate. January is particularly recommended for guests combining a calving safari with a warm, calm Zanzibar beach extension.
March & April — Long Rains Begin
March sees the beginning of the long rains, which intensify through April and May. The rains are not constant — typically afternoon thunderstorms with clear mornings — but road access in some areas becomes difficult. Wildlife disperses as water is available everywhere. Visitor numbers drop significantly. Camp prices are lowest. The landscape transforms from dry brown to vivid green in a matter of weeks. For experienced safari travellers willing to accept some logistical limitations, March and early April offer extraordinary photography, complete solitude, and the lowest rates of the year.
May & June — End of Rains, Migration North
May is the heart of the long rains and the least visited month. Late May sees the rains easing and the migration beginning its northward push through the central Serengeti. June marks the beginning of the dry season and the migration's arrival in the Western Corridor. The Grumeti River crossings typically begin in June. Visitor numbers are rising but still below peak. Camp prices are moderate. June is an excellent compromise month — better weather than May, lower crowds and prices than July–October, and the opening of the crossing season.
July, August & September — Peak Season, Mara Crossings
The classic safari season. The Mara River crossings peak from late July through September. The Serengeti is dry and golden. Wildlife concentrations at water sources are at their most photogenic. All camps and lodges are at full capacity. Prices are at their highest. Vehicle concentrations at major sightings are at their densest. Despite the crowds and cost, this is peak season for good reason — the combination of crossing drama, dry-season predator activity, and stable weather makes July–September the most reliably spectacular period in the Serengeti. Book well in advance — top mobile camps sell out twelve months ahead.
October — Shoulder Season, Good Value
October is an excellent compromise month. The crossing season is ending but some crossings still occur in early October. Visitor numbers are declining from the August peak. Wildlife is still concentrated and accessible. The short rains typically begin in late October, bringing some photogenic cloud formations and occasional afternoon showers. Camp rates begin to drop. October is our most recommended month for guests who want dry-season quality wildlife with slightly lower prices and fewer vehicles at sightings.
November & December — Short Rains, Good Birding
The short rains (November–December) are typically lighter and more intermittent than the long rains. The Serengeti begins greening. Migratory birds arrive in large numbers — November and December are the peak birding months in Tanzania, with Palaearctic migrants adding to the extraordinary resident bird population. The herds are moving south from Kenya. Camp prices are moderate. December can be busy around Christmas and New Year due to European holiday season, but the rest of November is excellent value with good wildlife and photogenic landscapes.

River Crossings

July – October

Northern Serengeti Mara River crossings peak July–September. Minimum five nights. Book twelve months in advance for the best camps.

Calving Season

January – February

Peak calving at Ndutu January–February. 8,000 calves daily. Highest predator density. Excellent photography. Lower prices than peak season.

Photography

July & February

Dry season light in July–August is the most consistently good for photography. February calving plains also excellent. Both require extended stays.

Budget Safari
