Frequently asked
questions.

How do I make an enquiry or booking?
Complete the enquiry form on our website, email info@kisangaratours.com, or call/WhatsApp +255 755 002 886. We respond to every enquiry within 24 hours (Monday–Saturday) with a preliminary itinerary proposal, guide recommendation, accommodation options, and cost estimate. There is no commitment and no payment required to receive a detailed proposal.
What is the best time to visit Tanzania?
Tanzania is a year-round destination. For the Great Migration Mara River crossings: July–August. For calving season and extraordinary predator action: January–February. For lush landscapes and fewer vehicles: March–May. For value and good wildlife: November–December. We match your ideal timing to your wildlife priorities in every proposal.
How many days do I need for a Tanzania safari?
We recommend a minimum of seven nights. Our most common northern circuit itinerary is 10–12 nights. The southern circuit (Ruaha/Nyerere) typically requires 8–10 nights. Kilimanjaro requires 7 nights on Lemosho, 6 nights on Marangu.
Is Tanzania safe for travel?
Tanzania is one of Africa's most politically stable and peaceful countries. The safari areas — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Ruaha, Zanzibar — have no active security advisories from any major Western government. Standard urban travel awareness applies in Arusha and Dar es Salaam.
What vaccinations are required for Tanzania?
A yellow fever certificate is required if arriving from a yellow fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for all safari areas. Consult your travel health clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure. We include a complete health checklist in every booking confirmation.
What is your payment schedule?
A 30% deposit secures your booking. The remaining 70% is due 60 days before departure. We accept USD, GBP, EUR, and KES. Bank transfer preferred — credit card accepted with a 2.8% processing fee.
Do you use subcontracted vehicles or guides?
Never. Every vehicle on every Kisangara departure is owned and maintained by Kisangara. Every lead guide is a direct Kisangara employee. We have never used a subcontracted vehicle or guide in sixteen years of operation.
What should I pack for a Tanzania safari?
Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, grey). Warm layers for early morning game drives. Sunscreen and wide-brimmed hat. Quality binoculars. We send a comprehensive packing list to every confirmed guest.

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?
Tanzania safari costs vary enormously depending on accommodation category, season, duration, and number of participants. A rough guide: budget safaris using mid-range lodges start from $300–$400 per person per night all-inclusive. Premium tented lodges cost $450–$800 per person per night. Luxury mobile camps cost $800–$1,500 per person per night. The cost per person decreases with group size. Kisangara designs safaris across all price points and provides a fully itemised quotation showing exactly where every dollar goes. Request a quote for an accurate figure based on your specific requirements.
Do I need travel insurance for Tanzania?
Travel insurance is strongly recommended for Tanzania. The specific coverage that matters most is medical evacuation — the cost of an emergency airlift from the Serengeti to Nairobi or Johannesburg can exceed $20,000. Flying Doctors Society of Africa (AMREF) evacuation coverage costs approximately $25 per person and provides evacuation from anywhere in East Africa. Standard travel insurance often covers this but the policy must explicitly include emergency evacuation. Kisangara provides Flying Doctors enrollment information with all booking documentation.
What vaccinations do I need for Tanzania?
The only legally required vaccination for Tanzania entry from most countries is Yellow Fever — required if arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. Recommended vaccinations (not required) include hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus, and rabies (for extended stays). Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended — consult your travel health clinic for the appropriate prescription. Full vaccination guidance is provided in the Kisangara pre-travel information pack. We recommend consulting a travel medicine clinic six to eight weeks before departure.
What currency do I need in Tanzania?
The Tanzania shilling (TZS) is the local currency. US dollars are widely accepted for large transactions and tips. Credit cards are accepted at major lodges and in Arusha city. In the field, cash is the only option — ATMs do not exist in the national parks. Tips for guides ($15–20 per day recommended), camp staff ($5–10 per day), and porters on Kilimanjaro ($10–15 per day) should be in US dollars or Tanzania shillings. All accommodation costs are settled directly with Kisangara before travel; no cash required in the parks for accommodation.
How do I tip my guide?
Tipping is customary and appreciated. The suggested amount for a safari guide is $15–20 per person per day. For an exceptional guide — one who has produced outstanding results, been particularly flexible, or significantly exceeded expectations — $25–30 per person per day is appropriate. Tips should be given directly to the guide at the end of the safari, in cash, in a sealed envelope if possible. Camp staff tips (cook, camp manager, tent staff) are typically $5–10 per person per day and can be given to the camp manager for distribution if preferred. There is no obligation to tip; it is an expression of appreciation for exceptional service.
What languages do the guides speak?
All Kisangara guides speak fluent Swahili and English. Several speak French, German, Italian, or Spanish at conversational or higher level. Some speak Japanese. When language preference is specified at the time of booking, we do our best to match the guest with a guide who speaks their preferred language. English-language safaris are the default and all guides are fluent.

What to Wear

Neutral Colours

Khaki, olive, beige, brown, and grey are the recommended colours for safari clothing. Bright colours and white startle animals. Blue and black attract tsetse flies. Light layers are ideal — cool at dawn, warm by 10am in the dry season. Lightweight long sleeves and trousers protect against sun and insects. A warm fleece or jacket for early mornings.

What to Bring

Essential Kit

Binoculars are the single most important item beyond clothing — 8x42 or 10x42 are the standard safari specification. Sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent, and a personal first aid kit. Dust is significant in the dry season — protect cameras and electronics with ziplock bags. A head torch for camp at night. A copy of your passport. Everything else is available in Arusha.

Health & Fitness

What to Expect

A standard game drive safari requires no particular fitness. Long days in a vehicle, occasional walks, and early mornings are the physical demands. Kilimanjaro requires specific cardiovascular training (four to six months recommended). Walking safaris require basic fitness. Altitude is not a factor in the game parks; Ngorongoro rim at 2,286m is the highest point in the standard Northern Circuit. No prior safari experience is necessary or expected.

Connectivity

Phones & Wi-Fi

Mobile connectivity exists in most park areas — Tanzania's networks cover the main safari corridors. Wi-Fi is available at most lodges and camps, though speeds vary. Mobile camps in remote areas may have satellite-based connectivity only. The absence of reliable connectivity is considered by most guests to be a feature rather than a problem. Pre-inform essential contacts that communication may be intermittent during the safari portion of the trip.
