Tanzania sits on the Indian Ocean with three island destinations of genuinely world-class quality. After days in Serengeti dust, the transition to warm turquoise water is one of the great contrasts in travel. A single domestic flight separates the two worlds.
Zanzibar — the largest island, about thirty minutes by air from Dar es Salaam or roughly ninety minutes from the Serengeti — is East Africa’s most visited island. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Arab–Portuguese architecture unique on the continent; northern beaches are white sand and turquoise; reef snorkelling and diving are excellent. It is also where Freddie Mercury was born, where the last sultan held court, and where Indian Ocean dhow trade has operated for centuries.
Pemba Island, forty kilometres north of Zanzibar, receives a fraction of Zanzibar’s visitors and is known mainly by serious divers. Pemba Channel wall diving — steep underwater walls, strong currents, pelagic species including hammerheads — ranks among the finest advanced diving in the western Indian Ocean. Accommodation is limited and deliberately understated. For seclusion and exceptional underwater access, Pemba is the recommendation.
Mafia Island, south of Dar es Salaam, is the most pristine of the three. Mafia Island Marine Park is among the most biodiverse marine protected areas in the western Indian Ocean. Whale sharks are present roughly November–February — among East Africa’s most reliable encounters. Sea turtles nest on the beaches. Limited accommodation, no mass tourism, and a genuinely remote character.

Zanzibar
Stone Town UNESCO heritage, Jozani Forest red colobus, excellent reef snorkelling, full accommodation range from boutique heritage hotels to beach resorts. North coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) has the most consistent beach conditions year-round. East coast (Paje) is the kitesurfing centre. Five nights minimum gives time for both Stone Town and the beach. The default recommendation for first-time Tanzania visitors.
Pemba Island
Forty kilometres north of Zanzibar with a fraction of the visitor numbers. Pemba Channel wall diving is world-class — steep walls, strong currents, hammerheads, exceptional visibility. Accommodation limited to a few small properties. Dense clove-scented forest, dhow-building villages, little tourist infrastructure outside dive centres. For serious divers and complete seclusion, Pemba is the choice.
Mafia Island
Mafia Island Marine Park is among the most biodiverse marine protected areas in the western Indian Ocean. Whale sharks arrive November–February in strong numbers. Sea turtles nest year-round. Reef diving is exceptional; the island is quiet; accommodation is limited to a handful of carefully selected properties. For the best marine experience with solitude, Mafia is the recommendation.

Stone Town is a living city, not a museum. People live in these buildings. Markets operate in these alleys. The carved doors are on working houses — Swahili–Arab–Portuguese architecture in continuous use.
Stone Town was a hub of Indian Ocean spice trade and the Arab slave trade for centuries. The Palace Museum, Old Fort, and Anglican Cathedral — built on the site of the last slave market — tell this history without sanitising it. Alleys lead to courtyards, mosques, tea houses, and Darajani Market where clove and cardamom stalls still show the trade that built Zanzibar’s wealth.
Freddie Mercury was born at 1 Shangani Street in 1946. A plaque marks the house; the Mercury Museum documents his life and the Zanzibar that formed him. A guided Stone Town walk with those stops takes about four hours.
