Tanzania Mountain Trekking

Africa climbs
here.

Tanzania offers three distinct mountain trekking experiences within easy reach of Arusha — from the equatorial summit of Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres to the perfectly conical Mount Meru and the active lava lake of Ol Doinyo Lengai in the Rift Valley. Each requires a different level of commitment and offers a completely different character of ascent.

Kilimanjaro is the dominant Tanzania mountain experience — the highest peak in Africa, accessible without technical climbing skills, and one of the most extraordinary seven-summit challenges in the world. But Kilimanjaro is not the only option. Mount Meru is a challenging and spectacular volcanic summit in Arusha National Park that serves as an excellent Kilimanjaro acclimatisation climb and is itself a world-class trekking destination. Ol Doinyo Lengai — the Mountain of God in the Maasai language — is an active volcano whose lava lake at the summit produces natrocarbonatite lava, the only such occurrence on Earth.

The combination of a Mount Meru acclimatisation climb followed by a Kilimanjaro summit attempt is one of the most effective strategies for improving summit success rates. The four-day Meru climb takes trekkers to 4,566 metres — high enough to trigger genuine altitude acclimatisation — and then descends. After three to four days at lower altitude, the body's acclimatisation gains are retained and the subsequent Kilimanjaro attempt benefits significantly. This combination is our standard recommendation for guests who have time for fourteen or more days in Tanzania.

Three Mountain Options

Choose your
ascent.

01 Africa's Highest · 5,895m

Kilimanjaro

The highest freestanding mountain on Earth and the most accessible high-altitude summit on any continent. Six routes of varying duration and difficulty — all walkable without technical climbing skills. The mountain passes through five ecological zones from equatorial forest to glacial arctic summit. Kisangara's summit rate: 91%. Recommended duration: 8-day Lemosho or Northern Circuit for best acclimatisation. Full guide, porter, and support team included.

02 Acclimatisation Climb · 4,566m

Mount Meru

Mount Meru is a spectacular active volcano in Arusha National Park — the fifth highest peak in Africa and one of the finest trekking mountains on the continent. The four-day ascent passes through forest inhabited by colobus monkeys, giraffe, and elephant, to a dramatic inner crater with a rock pinnacle of extraordinary geometry. The summit ridge walk offers direct views of Kilimanjaro at dawn from a parallel peak. Mount Meru serves as an excellent Kilimanjaro acclimatisation and is a complete mountain experience in its own right.

03 Active Volcano · 3,648m

Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai — the Mountain of God — is the only active natrocarbonatite volcano on Earth, producing lava that is uniquely cool and black (not red) and looks like ash rather than molten rock. The summit ascent is typically done as a night climb from 11pm, reaching the active lava lake at dawn. The climb is steep and demanding — an ascent and descent in ten hours — and requires no technical equipment but good fitness. A profoundly unusual geological experience within sight of Lake Natron and the Serengeti rim.

Planning Your Trek

What you need
to prepare.

How fit do I need to be?
Kilimanjaro requires good cardiovascular fitness — the ability to walk six to eight hours per day comfortably at sea level. No technical climbing or prior mountaineering experience is needed. A training programme of four to six months — regular aerobic exercise, hiking with a loaded pack, hill work — prepares most people adequately. Mount Meru requires similar fitness. Ol Doinyo Lengai is more physically demanding per hour than Kilimanjaro — steep, loose scree, done in darkness — and requires very good fitness and some experience with challenging terrain.
Can I combine a mountain climb with a safari?
Yes — this is our most popular combination for active travellers. The most common sequence is Kilimanjaro (7–8 days) followed by Northern Circuit safari (5–7 days) — the body craves warmth, rest, and good food after the mountain, which a safari camp provides perfectly. The reverse order is also possible and works well for acclimatisation purposes. Mount Meru plus Kilimanjaro plus a short safari is achievable in fourteen days and represents an extraordinary Tanzania itinerary.
What is the best time to trek?
The best Kilimanjaro climbing seasons are January–March and June–October. July through September is peak season with the most stable weather. The long rains (April–May) make the lower forest zones extremely wet and reduce summit visibility. Mount Meru is accessible year-round but shares Kilimanjaro's seasonal preferences. Ol Doinyo Lengai is best climbed in the dry season (June–October) when the approach roads are accessible and the summit crater is most stable.

"We did Mount Meru first — four days, excellent acclimatisation. Then Kilimanjaro via Lemosho, eight days. Our guide adjusted the pace throughout. Summit at 06:12 on day eight. The shadow of Kilimanjaro across Tanzania at that moment is something I will not forget."

Lars H.Oslo · Meru + Lemosho · July 2024

"Ol Doinyo Lengai at 3am, in the dark, on loose scree that slips two steps for every three. At dawn, black lava bubbling in the crater below us and the Serengeti plains visible two thousand metres below. No other experience in Africa is like it."
