Tanzania is a stable, safe, and welcoming destination for international travellers. The country has maintained a peaceful political environment since independence in 1961, and the safari areas are among the safest environments in East Africa. This guide covers the practical information that makes a Tanzania trip go smoothly.
The Tanzania shilling (TZS) is the local currency. US dollars are widely accepted for large transactions and are the recommended currency to carry. ATMs are available in Arusha and Dar es Salaam but do not exist in the national parks — carry sufficient cash for tips and any in-park purchases before leaving the city. Major lodges and camps accept credit cards; always confirm before arrival. The exchange rate at Arusha banks and authorised exchange bureaux is reliable; avoid street money changers.
Tanzania operates on East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3, year-round — there is no daylight saving adjustment. The country has reliable mobile coverage across the main safari areas on the Vodacom, Airtel, and Tigo networks. A local SIM card purchased at Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam airport costs approximately $5 and provides inexpensive data for maps and messaging. WhatsApp is the standard communication platform for local businesses and your Kisangara guide team.
Passport valid for at least six months beyond departure date from Tanzania. Tanzania eVisa applied for at evisa.go.tz — typical processing 24–72 hours. A printed copy of the eVisa approval document for the immigration officer. Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. All documents photocopied and stored separately from originals.
Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended — consult a travel medicine clinic for the appropriate prescription for your itinerary and health profile. Carry a personal first aid kit including antihistamines, blister treatment, and any prescription medications with sufficient supply.
Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential. Emergency evacuation from the Serengeti to Nairobi or Johannesburg costs $15,000–$25,000. Flying Doctors Society of Africa (AMREF) evacuation membership costs approximately $25 per person and covers evacuation from anywhere in East Africa. This is separate from standard travel insurance and is strongly recommended for all Tanzania visitors.
Carry US dollars in small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20) for tips and park incidentals. ATMs in Arusha accept international cards (Barclays, NMB, CRDB are most reliable). No ATMs exist in the national parks. Lodges and camps accept credit cards; confirm individually. Notify your bank of travel dates to prevent card blocking. Bring more cash than you think you need — better to return with it than to run short in the field.
A local Tanzania SIM card is inexpensive and useful. Vodacom has the best coverage across the Northern Circuit. Purchase at Kilimanjaro International Airport on arrival — bring your unlocked phone. Download offline Google Maps of the Northern Circuit parks before leaving Arusha. WhatsApp is the local standard for all communication with guides and Kisangara staff.
Neutral colours — khaki, olive, brown, grey — for game drives. Bright colours startle animals; blue and black attract tsetse flies. Lightweight long sleeves and trousers for sun and insect protection. A warm fleece for early mornings (cold at dawn in the dry season). Comfortable walking shoes or boots for any walking activities. Swimwear for the island extension. A dust bag for camera equipment in the dry season.
