Tanzania Travel Advice

What you should
know before you go.

Tanzania is a stable, safe, and welcoming destination for international travellers. The country has maintained a peaceful political environment since independence in 1961, and the safari areas are among the safest environments in East Africa. This guide covers the practical information that makes a Tanzania trip go smoothly.

The Tanzania shilling (TZS) is the local currency. US dollars are widely accepted for large transactions and are the recommended currency to carry. ATMs are available in Arusha and Dar es Salaam but do not exist in the national parks — carry sufficient cash for tips and any in-park purchases before leaving the city. Major lodges and camps accept credit cards; always confirm before arrival. The exchange rate at Arusha banks and authorised exchange bureaux is reliable; avoid street money changers.

Tanzania operates on East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3, year-round — there is no daylight saving adjustment. The country has reliable mobile coverage across the main safari areas on the Vodacom, Airtel, and Tigo networks. A local SIM card purchased at Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam airport costs approximately $5 and provides inexpensive data for maps and messaging. WhatsApp is the standard communication platform for local businesses and your Kisangara guide team.

Essential Pre-Travel Checklist

Six things to
arrange before you fly.

Documents

Passport & Visa

Passport valid for at least six months beyond departure date from Tanzania. Tanzania eVisa applied for at evisa.go.tz — typical processing 24–72 hours. A printed copy of the eVisa approval document for the immigration officer. Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. All documents photocopied and stored separately from originals.

Health

Vaccinations & Malaria

Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended — consult a travel medicine clinic for the appropriate prescription for your itinerary and health profile. Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations are recommended. Consult your travel medicine clinic six to eight weeks before departure. Carry a personal first aid kit including antihistamines, blister treatment, and any prescription medications with sufficient supply.

Insurance

Medical Evacuation Cover

Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential. Emergency evacuation from the Serengeti to Nairobi or Johannesburg costs $15,000–$25,000. Flying Doctors Society of Africa (AMREF) evacuation membership costs approximately $25 per person and covers evacuation from anywhere in East Africa. This is separate from standard travel insurance and is strongly recommended for all Tanzania visitors.

Money

Cash & Cards

Carry US dollars in small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20) for tips and park incidentals. ATMs in Arusha accept international cards (Barclays, NMB, CRDB are most reliable). No ATMs exist in the national parks. Lodges and camps accept credit cards; confirm individually. Notify your bank of travel dates to prevent card blocking. Bring more cash than you think you need — better to return with it than to run short in the field.

Communication

Phone & SIM

A local Tanzania SIM card is inexpensive and useful. Vodacom has the best coverage across the Northern Circuit. Purchase at Kilimanjaro International Airport on arrival — bring your unlocked phone. Download offline Google Maps of the Northern Circuit parks before leaving Arusha. WhatsApp is the local standard for all communication with guides and Kisangara staff.

Clothing

What to Pack

Neutral colours — khaki, olive, brown, grey — for game drives. Bright colours startle animals; blue and black attract tsetse flies. Lightweight long sleeves and trousers for sun and insect protection. A warm fleece for early mornings (cold at dawn in the dry season). Comfortable walking shoes or boots for any walking activities. Swimwear for the island extension. A dust bag for camera equipment in the dry season.

Safety in Tanzania

Honest advice on
staying safe.

Is Tanzania safe for tourists?
Tanzania is, by African standards, a very safe destination. The national parks and safari areas have an excellent safety record — violent crime is extremely rare in these environments. Arusha and Dar es Salaam require the standard urban awareness of any developing-world city: keep valuables out of sight, use recommended taxis rather than hailing on the street, and be aware of your surroundings in busy market areas. Zanzibar is safe but petty theft on the beach and in the markets occurs — keep phones and cameras secure. The overall safety profile for a well-organised Tanzania itinerary is very high.
What are the emergency contacts I need?
The Tanzania emergency number is 112 (police/fire/ambulance). Flying Doctors emergency evacuation: +254 20 6992000 (Nairobi). Kisangara 24-hour emergency contact: provided at booking and included in the pre-travel pack. Your travel insurance emergency number: note this before travel. The nearest major hospital to the Serengeti is in Arusha (Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre, +255 27 254 8530). All Kisangara guides carry emergency communication equipment and evacuation protocols.
What if something goes wrong on safari?
All Kisangara guides are trained in first aid and emergency response. For medical emergencies, the guide carries a first aid kit and communication equipment for emergency evacuation coordination. For vehicle breakdowns, a backup vehicle or support is dispatched within two to three hours on standard Northern Circuit routes. For itinerary disruptions, the Kisangara operations team is reachable 24 hours and will manage logistics from Arusha. Guests in the field have a direct contact number for the operations team, not a general helpline.

"I travel alone and always research safety carefully before booking. Tanzania felt genuinely safe at every point — in Arusha, in the parks, on Zanzibar. The Kisangara pre-travel pack covered every practical detail I needed. I arrived knowing exactly what to do and who to call."

"We had a vehicle issue on day three in the Serengeti. Our guide radioed and a replacement vehicle arrived within ninety minutes. No fuss, no panic, no drama. The system worked exactly as it should. We were back at the lion encounter before the light changed."
