Tanzania welcomes visitors from over 120 countries on a visa-on-arrival or e-Visa basis. The application process is straightforward, the fees are transparent, and the requirements are minimal. Here is what you need to know before you travel.
Citizens of most Western countries — United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Australia, Canada, Japan, and others — qualify for a standard tourist visa valid for up to ninety days. The visa can be obtained on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, or Zanzibar International Airport. It can also be applied for online via the Tanzania Immigration Department e-Visa portal before travel, which Kisangara recommends to avoid any airport queue delays.
The standard single-entry visa fee is USD $50, payable in cash (US dollars preferred) at the point of entry, or by card through the e-Visa portal. A multiple-entry visa is available for USD $100 and is recommended for guests planning to combine Tanzania with Kenya, as many Serengeti itineraries cross the border into the Masai Mara.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Tanzania. You must have at least one blank page for the visa stamp. If your passport is close to expiry or running low on pages, renew it before you travel — airport immigration is strict on both requirements and there is no remedy if you arrive with an inadequate passport.
Valid for ninety days from the date of entry. Allows a single entry into Tanzania. Cost is USD $50. Suitable for guests whose entire safari and beach itinerary is contained within Tanzania and who do not plan to cross into Kenya or Uganda. The majority of Kisangara guests use this visa type. Available on arrival or as an e-Visa applied for online before travel.
Valid for twelve months with multiple entries. Cost is USD $100. Recommended for guests combining Tanzania and Kenya in a single itinerary — for example, Serengeti followed by Masai Mara. The visa allows re-entry into Tanzania after crossing into Kenya without obtaining a new visa. Also useful for guests making return visits within the same calendar year.
A combined visa covering Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda — available to nationals of eligible countries for USD $100. Allows multiple entries across all three countries for ninety days. If your itinerary includes gorilla trekking in Uganda, a Kenya safari, and a Tanzania safari in a single trip, this is the most cost-effective and logistically simple option. Check current eligible nationality lists on the Tanzania Immigration Department website.
The e-Visa is faster at the airport, gives you documentation before departure, and is generally smoother than the on-arrival process. Here is how to apply.
Visit the Tanzania Immigration Department e-Visa portal at immigration.go.tz. Create an account with your email address. The system will send a verification email — check your spam folder if it does not arrive within five minutes.
Fill in your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport. Enter your intended entry date and port of entry — Kilimanjaro International Airport for most safari guests. Upload a passport photograph (recent, white background, face clearly visible) and the data page of your passport as a clear scan or photograph.
The USD $50 single-entry fee is payable by international credit or debit card. The portal accepts Visa and Mastercard. Keep the payment reference number — you will need it for the collection step. Payment is non-refundable once the application is submitted, regardless of whether the visa is approved.
Processing typically takes three to five working days, though it can be faster. You will receive an email when your visa is ready. Download and print the e-Visa document — you will present it at immigration alongside your passport. Apply at least two weeks before travel to allow time for any processing delays or requests for additional documentation.
