After a 4WD transfer to Lemosho Park Gate for registration, porters prepare supplies and luggage while you begin your ascent along the forest trail. The path winds gently through lush rainforest, alive with birds and occasional monkeys, before reaching Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp at 2,895 metres. Here, you spend the night surrounded by the tranquil forest, gaining your first taste of the mountain environment.

The trek continues east across the Shira Plateau, offering breathtaking views of Shira Cathedral. You cross moorland meadows, gradually leaving the forest behind, before reaching Shira 1 Camp at 3,500 metres. Following the “walk high, sleep low” principle, you then descend approximately 650 metres to Barranco Camp, situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall. This section provides excellent photographic opportunities and a sense of achievement for tackling significant elevation gain and descent in one day.

After reaching the top, the trail descends and traverses scree to reach the Karanga Valley (3,930 m), located beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. This shorter day offers stunning scenery and allows your body to recover and continue acclimatising for the upcoming summit push.
