Your trek begins with pickup in Arusha and transfer to Momella Gate for registration and briefing. The first section feels like a walking safari—an armed ranger joins as you hike through forest and open clearings where you may spot giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, and colobus monkeys. The trail climbs gradually into cooler montane forest before reaching Miriakamba Hut, a quiet mountain base ideal for resting and settling into altitude

Overnight: Miriakamba Hut

After breakfast, you continue uphill at an easy, steady pace. The scenery shifts from dense forest into heather and moorland, and the views become wider and more dramatic. As you climb, you’ll start seeing the Meru crater landscapes and ridgelines more clearly. Arrive at Saddle Hut in the afternoon, with time to relax, hydrate, and enjoy the alpine atmosphere

Overnight: Saddle Hut

This is the secret to a smoother summit. After a relaxed morning, you hike up Little Meru a short but rewarding climb that helps your body adjust to altitude (“climb high, sleep low” benefit). From the top, enjoy panoramic views over the crater and across to Kilimanjaro on clear days. Return to Saddle Hut for a full afternoon of rest, early dinner, and preparation for the summit night.

Overnight: Saddle Hut

You start very early (around midnight–1:00 AM) with headlamps and a slow, focused climb up rocky slopes toward the crater rim. As dawn breaks, you reach Socialist Peak (4,566m) for sunrise one of Meru’s most unforgettable moments, often with Kilimanjaro visible in the distance. After photos, you descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest and meal, then continue down to Momella Gate, where your transfer returns you to Arusha by afternoon/early evening.
